There are a number of winter activities available to both visitors and residents of Canada’s oldest city. Cross-country skiing at a public park, skating at a local rink and attending a comedy festival are just a few of the ways to beat the winter blues in St. John’s.

Cross-Country Skiing, Snowshoeing and Sledding in Pippy Park

Pippy Park, a popular spot for all-year-round recreation in St. John’s, has several facilities for winter fun. Don a pair of cross-country skis and enjoy the fresh scent of fir trees on one of the park’s ski trails. Bear Mountain Trail and Eagle’s Perch, both groomed trails, are good choices for the novice skier. Three Pond Barrens, a series of ungroomed trails that are steep and narrow in places, are suitable for the more experienced skier.

Pippy Park also offers:

• Introductory cross-country skiing lessons, which are offered on weekends at the Pippy Park Activity Centre during the winter season.
• Snowshoe and cross-country ski rentals, which are available at the Winter Activity Centre.
• Steep hills that are perfect for sledding or tobogganing.

Downhill Skiing at Sugarloaf Hill

Sugarloaf Hill, operated by the St. John’s Ski Club, is located just outside the city in the community of Logy Bay. This downhill ski facility has three ski lifts and five runs with two main slopes. Seasonal memberships, including those for students and families, are available for the ski season.
