Holidays in Scotland: Where is the Isle of Arran?
Arran lies in the middle of the Firth of Clyde in the south-west of Scotland midway between the Ayrshire coast and the Mull of Kintyre. It is just over 60 miles in circumference with the main road running around the Isle and two other roads crossing the moors. The north of the Isle is the more mountainous part with the highest mountain, Goatfell, rising to 2866 feet. The Holy Isle lies off the east coast of Arran and is home to a Buddhist settlement.
Travelling to the Isle of Arran
The main ferry to Arran leaves from Ardrossan harbour on the Ayrshire coast . There is a regular service and it is possible to make a day trip to the Isle though it is far better to plan for a longer holiday in order to take in everything there is to see and to soak up Arran’s unique ambience.
