Belcourt Castle

Eleven ghosts reportedly haunt Belcourt Castle on 649 Bellevue Avenue, including a female apparition in a white dress who disappears through doors and a monk who floats above a woodcarving. In the ballroom, two chairs have a ghostly presence. If a visitor places a hand on one chair, their hand feels frosty and tingly. If someone tries to sit in the other chair, they may feel resistance or even thrown from the chair. Also in the ballroom, a ghost in a suit of armor howls. The owner of armor reportedly died from a spear through the eye slot.

Richard Morris Hunt designed the building for Oliver Hazard Perry Belmont, a bachelor who inherited millions from his father August Belmont. The castle reflected his love for medieval culture. Belmont ended up marrying the wife of his best friend. Alva Smith married William Kissam Vanderbilt and had three children only to leave him for Belmont in 1895.

Over the years, Belcourt Castle fell in disrepair until the Tinney family bought the castle for $25,000 in 1956 and repaired it. The owners began giving tours in the sixty- room museum with furnishings from all over the world. Today, the owners give tours during the day and ghost tours at night.
