Maps New Plymouth New Zealand
Mining for minerals has been a hot topic in the New Zealand media recently. The media highlighted recently that the New Zealand Government had asked the Department of Economic Development and the Department of Conservation in August 2009, to do a stocktake of publicly listed areas that were listed under the Crown Minerals act 1991, under Schedule 4 restrictions. Schedule 4 restricts any mining activity or mining related activity in publicly owned conservation areas.
A discussion paper, published by the Ministry of Economic Development in March 2010, highlights the objectives and conclusions of the stocktake. However, to date nothing has been confirmed by the New Zealand Government regarding the discussion papers conclusions.
Recession Solution
The New Zealand government is looking at this option because it is trying to bring New Zealand into line with Australia and boost its economy at the same time. Australia has a long history of mining and over the past ten years their economy has boomed because of it. Although over the past two years mining has slowed, there have been new projects started whilst others have kept going. It is the mining industry that has helped keep Australia afloat through the recession.
