New Zealand Rugby Matches
Montpelier could have wished for a more forgiving Heineken Cup debut than defending champions Leinster. The Rugby World Cup took away some of the stars who helped the Mediterranean side to the Top 14 final last year and they languish in 12th place this season. They also missed out on the chance to bed in the returning stars last week when their Top 14 match was cancelled due to an outbreak of Mumps. However, they do have some class players such as Trinh-Duc who made such an impact in the RWC final and the gargantuan 6’ 4” 19 stone back row player Gorgodze who certainly made an impact throughout the tournament.
Leinster were also glad to have players back from New Zealand, but their 2nd string has been functioning while the internationals have been away. Without the likes of Johnny Sexton, Jamie Heaslip and Gordon Darcy, they have still managed to achieve a 2nd place position in the RaboDirect Pro12 league. They were still missing Brian O’Driscoll however who was out injured.
The French side started well, playing a far more expansive style than they have demonstrated in the Top 14 this season. The lack of practice at playing wide may have hampered them as they dropped some passes when they had created half a chance. Despite this, there wasn’t much to choose between the two sides in the first 15 minutes, Leinster edging it 3-6 with all the scores coming from the boot.
