San Diego County Landfills
The San Diego river is 52 miles long; it originates in East San Diego County and empties into the Pacific Ocean at Dog Beach in Ocean Beach, California. The San Diego river is home to native plants that flourish in the wetlands environment. Wetland plants work with bacteria to remove pollutants from the water and create a safer and healthier environment for other plant and animal life.
The Environment of Wetland Areas
Wetlands are found in an area where the river meets the ocean. The area is a mix of freshwater and salt water, combined together with hydric soil that has little or no oxygen; this creates a unique environment for plants to grow. As the tide ebbs and flows in and out of the river, the surrounding land is sometimes covered in water and sometimes dry, so native plants have to be adaptable to the ever-changing environment. Wetland areas are common in coastal areas and river estuaries such as the San Diego estuary.
